Independent Travel to Italy is Easier Than You Think

Although it’s hard to believe, my first trip to Italy was more than 20 years ago. And a lot has changed since then that makes travel to Italy easier and more enjoyable.

In the 1980s, Italy was still using the lira as their currency. So you had to keep track of the exchange rate, and change your money often. Since ATMs weren’t around, you carried travelers’ checks. And when you wanted to exchange money, you went to a bank or the American Express office. Compared to getting local currency from a cash machine, it was a hassle.

Before the Internet, making hotel reservations was a challenge – especially if you didn’t want to stay in a chain hotel with an 800 number. Most of the smaller properties didn’t speak English, so you had to learn enough Italian to request a room on the phone. And you had to call when someone would answer the phone – very early in the morning if you live on the west coast. The other alternative was to write a letter requesting a room, which was a slow process. By the time you learned that the hotel you were interested in was unavailable, your second and third choices could be full too.

Guide to Vicenza, Italy

Introduction

Vicenza is situated between Padova and Verona, in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is known as the city of Palladio. The 16th century architect Palladio, who worked in the city, is one of the most influential architects of all time. It is one of the wealthiest cities in Italy.

Unique Points

Vicenza has one the highest concentrations of historic buildings of any Italian city. The influence of Palladio is significant in the city. His best known works include the Basillica, the Tetro Olimpico, the world’s oldest surviving indoor theatre, and the Villa Rotonda. However don’t be put off and think that this is just a city for architecture buffs. The city centre is fairly compact and it is a pleasure just to wander round and soak up the atmosphere. The city is also famous for goldsmiths who were first referred to in the city statutes in 1339. There are around 1000 local firms producing half of Italy’s goldware.

Include Lovely Florence in Your Italy Vacation!

Are you planning the vacation of your lifetime to Italy? One thing is for certain, you are going to have a fabulous time if you include all of the major cities in the country. Apart from Rome and Venice, one city that should not be avoided is Florence (known as Firenze by the locals). Florence is a gorgeous little town full of amazing architecture in the beautiful Renaissance style (Leonardo Da Vinci would be so proud!) as well as incredible museums like the Galleria de Accademia where you will have the privilege of bearing witness to “the David”. This small town is packed with luxury shops (can you say Ferragamo shoes?), delicious trattorias and gorgeous walkways over beautiful bridges (don’t miss the Ponte Vecchio!). Florence is just a short 2 hour train ride from Rome but it seems a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. A trip to Florence is an absolute must when you are planning your Italy vacation.

It doesn’t seem quite fair to only give Florence one afternoon. There is just too much to see and it would be a travesty to have to miss out of the bevy of things to see and do in this gorgeous little town. If you are basing your vacation using Rome as your “hub” city, leave your suitcases at your hotel and pack a small overnight bag for your time in Florence. Hop of the train in Rome (Eurostar is the cleanest and the only non-stop train service available) and get ready to be transported into renaissance times. You will get off the train and will find yourself directly inside of Rome, so there will be no need for a taxi. The city is relatively small, and with a good tourist map, you will be able to find your way around this city quite easily. There are a few places that you simply must not miss. The most important one is the one that will catch your eye the most and that is the Duomo. This incredible and awe inspiring piece of architecture is the most famous symbol of Florence. The delicate pieces so intricately carved are truly jaw dropping. Pictures just won’t do it justice.
